In short

  • Before teeth, wipe the gums daily with a soft, damp cloth.
  • Once teeth come in, brush twice a day with a rice-grain smear of fluoride toothpaste.
  • No bottles in bed, and see a dentist by the first birthday.

Before the first tooth

Wipe your baby’s gums every day with a soft, damp washcloth.

Once the first tooth comes in

  • Brush twice a day with an infant toothbrush and a smear of fluoride toothpaste about the size of a grain of rice. At age 3, move to a pea-sized amount.
  • Don’t put your baby to bed with a bottle of milk or juice. Liquids that sit on the teeth can cause serious tooth decay.
  • See a dentist by your child’s first birthday, or within 6 months of the first tooth.

Dental care note

This guide shares general tips based on pediatric dental guidance. For advice about your baby's teeth, fluoride or when to book the first dental visit, ask a pediatric dentist or your pediatrician.
